Abstract
We have investigated the frequency of ?-fetoprotein (A.F.P.) and hepatitis associated antigen (R.A.A) by the method of agarose gel diffusion assay in Korean patients with primary liver-cell cancer, and the results are as follows;
1) A.F P. vas positive in 16 of 32 cases (50%).
2) The occurrence of A.F.P.positives was less likely in well differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma and in female patients as compared to that of poorly differentiated types and male patients.
3) H. A A. was positive in 8 of 32 cases of hepatoma (25%), and there was a tendency for H. A A positive individuals with primary liver-cell cancer to be A. F.P.-positive,
4) The frequency of H.A.A. positives in hepatoma is. higher than in normal controls and hospitalized individuals without liver cirrhosis or acute and chronic hepatitis.
The above data provide support for the hypothesis (that antecedent infection of hepatitis viius may play some role in the etiology and pathogenesis of primary liver-cell cancer in Korea.
